Sisters Improve The World?
I know what you’re thinking. Ok, Khadeeja, yes, I love my sister. I mean she’s awesome and everything but I’m not sure how having a sister improves the world.
Then there are others of you with, shall we say, more challenged relationships with your sisters. You’re probably thinking, girl, please. Having a sister hasn’t improved a thing for me. Hell, my sister is doing worse than I am.
But stay with me and consider some of the following ideas.
Talk Therapy
One way sisters improve the world may be through a form of talk therapy. According to this article in the New York Times, it is. Just having regular conversations with your sister(s) can make people happier.
And by the way, the article says it’s not just for sisters talking to each other but also for brothers talking to sisters. Just one more good reason to call your sister!
The Big Sister Little Sister Dynamic
I’m a middle child so I’m both a big sister and a little sister. I can tell you the big sister little sister dynamic is a unique one.
One reason is because as a big sister to a younger sister, you feel a responsibility for your little sister. You know some things and you want to make sure she can benefit from that.
There are so many reasons the big sister, little sister dynamic is so special. I think this blog post does a great job of covering most of them.
One Is The Watcher, One Is The Dancer
So often, big sisters are the stars of the show for little sisters. I know with my daughters, my older daughter can do NO WRONG in the eyes of her younger sister.
One thing I love about their dynamic is as it relates to the Louise Gluck quote, is how they seamlessly switch roles of being the dancer and the watcher.
Sisters Improve The World By Providing Comfort
Sisters are often the first people we want to share our ups and downs with. In our family, those downs come complete with sisters who are ready to fight whoever needs it for messing with one of us. (It’s the same with the brothers but this is a post about sisters, lol).
Marilyn Monroe and Her Sister
Did you know Marilyn Monroe had a sister? Yep, she did. Her name was Berniece Baker Miracle. The two were half sisters and Berniece wrote a memoire about their relationship. The book is called My Sister Marilyn.
Sisters Improve The World Through Perspective
When it comes down to it, if you have a good relationship with your sister, she balances out parts of you. Your sister can improve your world because she knows you. The good bad and ugly parts of you and so her perspective can be invaluable. Often our sisters can offer us insight to things we simply miss on our own.
Sisters Improve The World By Keeping The Peace
Who doesn’t strive for world peace? One way we can maintain peace on a smaller scale is to make sure to keep someone’s sister’s name out of your mouth!
Unless it’s flattering, and even then, it can be iffy. The Beyonce quote above sums up how a lot of us feel about our sisters.
And of course, after the Elevator Scene with JayZ, we all know how Solange feels about Beyonce.
