I Thought I Knew All The Crooklyn Trivia…Until I Rewatched The Movie One More Time
Crooklyn trivia has been around for years, so I honestly thought I already knew everything there was to know about one of my favorite movies. It turns out I couldn’t have been more wrong.
My older daughter, Chalisse, and I have loved watching the movie Crooklyn for years. Recently, my granddaughter Kylie and I started watching it together because I wanted her to experience one of her mom’s favorite movies. We didn’t get to finish it, so a few days later, while I was working on CupofMood projects, I decided to start it over from the beginning.
That simple decision sent me down a rabbit hole I never expected. One surprising discovery led to another, and before I knew it, I was pausing scenes, rewinding the movie, and searching for behind-the-scenes stories I’d somehow never heard before. Then I noticed something hiding in plain sight that made me stop, grab the remote, and say, “I’ll be doggone.”
I’ll save that discovery until the end because it’s the best surprise of all. Along the way, though, I found several pieces of Crooklyn trivia that genuinely shocked me and made me appreciate this movie even more.

🏡 The Crooklyn Family Could Never Afford Their House Today
The very first fact I stumbled across completely changed the way I looked at the Carmichael family’s home. Their brownstone at 7 Arlington Place is a real Brooklyn house, and properties like it have sold for millions of dollars in recent years.
That really puts the movie into perspective. Here we have a hardworking family trying to stretch every dollar, yet today the very same style of home has become a luxury that most families couldn’t dream of buying. I don’t know about you, but that was one piece of Crooklyn trivia I definitely didn’t see coming.

🛝 Spike Lee Actually Had To Teach The Kids How To Play Outside
This discovery made me laugh because it reminded me just how different childhood looks today than it did when many of us were growing up.
Several of the young actors didn’t know how to play neighborhood games like Double Dutch and stickball, so Spike Lee taught them before filming. As a proud Gen Xer, I couldn’t help but smile because nobody had to teach us those games. We simply walked outside, found our friends, and started playing until the streetlights came on.
Knowing that little behind-the-scenes story made those scenes even more meaningful to me because they weren’t just entertaining—they were preserving a piece of childhood history.
🎭 Wait…That Was RuPaul?!
I’ve watched Crooklyn more times than I can count, so I was genuinely surprised when I learned that one of the neighborhood characters was RuPaul, years before becoming the international superstar we know today.
In retrospect, I don’t know how I didn’t realize it before. And of course, once someone points it out, it’s impossible to miss. Until then, though, it’s one of those blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moments that gives longtime fans a great excuse to watch the movie all over again. I absolutely love movie discoveries like that!
📺 Can You Imagine Crooklyn As A TV Series?
Just when I thought the surprises were over, I discovered that Crooklyn was originally considered as a television project before becoming a feature film.
It was passed over as series but I would imagine it would have been similar to the remake of the Wonder Years. And where as that was set more during Baby Boomers time, this would have been firmly in my GenX timeline. So, I’m a little sad it didn’t make it to a series.
And as surprising as that was, it pales in comparison to the last surprise. In fact, I don’t know how I’ve never heard anyone mention this before now. And believe me, I went back and did some research and NOTHING shows this last bit of shocking Crooklyn trivia.
👀 The Crooklyn Secret I Had Missed For Years
While Troy was visiting Viola, I looked up and noticed a familiar man playing the keyboard on the church television. I immediately grabbed the remote because I knew I had seen him somewhere earlier in the movie.
After rewinding to the opening neighborhood scenes, I realized the church musician was Tony Eyes. Suddenly, the line “We know our little secret” took on a whole new meaning for me, and all I could say was, “I’ll be doggone.”
I cannot say whether Spike Lee intended that connection as a hidden message. Still, once I noticed it, I could not unsee it, and it became my favorite piece of Crooklyn trivia from the entire rewatch.
🎬 Confession Time: I Love Me Some Delroy Lindo
Now, I am not simply a Delroy Lindo fan. I love me some Delroy Lindo, and I will watch practically any movie he appears in because his presence always commands the screen.
Then again, I probably have a type. Tall, dark, and handsome certainly describes Delroy Lindo, and it also describes my husband, Michael, so clearly my taste has remained consistent. 😄❤️
Anywho, that was a completely irrelevant fact but when else am I going to be able to tell you I love me some Delroy Lindo?😄
Now back to Crooklyn.

Watching Crooklyn always makes me think about the wonderful memories my family has created in New York. The neighborhoods, brownstones, music, and unmistakable city energy remind me why New York continues to inspire so much of the drinkware I add to CupofMood.
That nostalgia also makes New York drinkware perfect for movie nights, travel memories, and anyone who carries a little piece of the city in their heart.

Finally, rewatching Crooklyn reminded me why favorite movies deserve another look. Sometimes the best surprise has been sitting in plain sight for years, waiting for the exact moment when you finally notice it.
