Oh, Hawaii! Just hearing the name brings beautiful blue ocean waters, swaying palm trees, golden beaches, and tropical flowers to mind. And if you’re a beach lover like me, you probably understand why experiencing those magnificent Hawaiian beaches was high on my bucket list!
For years, I dreamed about visiting Hawaii. However, while I was working, I always felt that a destination so far away deserved plenty of time to explore. I wanted at least two weeks to enjoy the islands, appreciate their beauty, and truly experience the destination.
Then came retirement in September 2020, and suddenly that long-awaited dream felt much closer! By February 2021, Michael and I were headed toward Hawaii for my birthday. Honey, getting there turned into an adventure that deserves its own story! 😂
Now, as I continue my Sippin My Way To 60 journey toward my 60th birthday in February 2027, I’m revisiting some of my favorite experiences from my 50s. My Maui birthday adventure is definitely one of them!

✈️🌺 My Hawaiian Birthday Adventure Started With Quite A Detour!
Have you ever planned a dream vacation only to discover that the journey itself would become an unforgettable adventure? Well, that’s exactly what happened when Michael and I headed to Hawaii in February 2021.
Since we were traveling across the country, I decided to surprise my mom in Arizona for her birthday. Hers is February 4, and mine is February 14, so the timing was perfect! After carefully preparing for travel during COVID, I got to celebrate with my mom and my aunts. What a wonderful way to begin our adventure!
Next came Sedona, another favorite destination I had been eager to revisit with Michael. We spent several days enjoying Arizona’s spectacular landscapes and also explored the Grand Canyon together. Seeing those breathtaking views with him made an already special trip even more memorable.
And then came Hawaii! Unfortunately, when we arrived, airport officials informed us that our COVID tests came from a testing provider that Hawaii hadn’t approved. The choices presented to us involved strict hotel quarantine or leaving the islands.
Well, honey, after traveling all that way, I was determined to make my birthday dream happen! 😂
So I arranged an overnight flight to San Francisco, found a Marriott hotel, scheduled another COVID test with an approved provider, and booked our return to Hawaii. We even enjoyed a little time at Fisherman’s Wharf before flying back with the proper test results!
Now, THAT is a birthday travel adventure! I’ll share the full story of those unexpected detours in another Sippin My Way To 60 adventure. For now, just know that finally arriving in Maui felt absolutely wonderful! 🌺✈️
🏖️🌊 Maui’s Beautiful Beaches Were A Dream Come True
Once Michael and I finally settled into Maui, I was ready to enjoy the beautiful island I’d dreamed about for years. And what an extraordinary destination!
The turquoise ocean waters, tropical greenery, volcanic landscapes, and spectacular coastlines were every bit as captivating as I’d imagined. As a lifelong beach lover, I could have spent hours simply appreciating the natural beauty surrounding us.
Although the COVID restrictions affected some of our original plans, we rented a car and explored Maui at our own pace. I loved seeing the island’s different landscapes, driving through beautiful surroundings, and discovering the scenery that makes Hawaii such a memorable destination.
There’s something about standing near the ocean and taking in a breathtaking view that makes you appreciate the beauty of this world. Those are the kinds of travel experiences that stay with me long after I return home.

🌿🏝️ Hawaii’s Beauty Inspired Me To Learn More
Another meaningful part of our trip came from learning more about Hawaiian history and speaking with longtime residents. Michael and I have always enjoyed exploring the history behind the places we visit. During our time in Maui, conversations with local people introduced us to experiences and perspectives that encouraged me to learn more about Hawaii’s past.
I began exploring the history of the Hawaiian Kingdom, the overthrow of Queen Liliʻuokalani in 1893, and the United States’ annexation of Hawaii in 1898. I also learned how an 1896 law made English the required language of instruction in Hawaiian schools, profoundly affecting the Hawaiian language and its preservation.
These are important chapters of history, documented by the National Archives and the Hawaii State Department of Education.
Hearing residents speak about cultural changes and the challenges facing Native Hawaiian communities touched me deeply. I returned home with wonderful vacation memories, greater curiosity, and a deeper appreciation for the people and traditions that make Hawaii so extraordinary.
For me, meaningful travel includes opportunities to listen, learn, and appreciate the stories of the people who call these beautiful destinations home. 🌺❤️

Now, here’s where this story becomes especially personal. I brought home souvenirs from our 2021 Hawaii adventure, just as I love doing when I travel. Those keepsakes represented a special birthday celebration, beautiful island memories, and a destination that had been on my bucket list for years.
