If you’re looking for inspiration for an epic 50th birthday party, have I got a celebration to share with you! My 50th birthday was one of the most fabulous weekends of my life. Even today, looking at these pictures makes me smile from ear to ear.
It was one unforgettable birthday weekend, three party-planning tips, and a lifetime of beautiful memories. And with my 60th birthday approaching in February, I thought, what better way to begin my Sipping My Way to 60 countdown than by revisiting one of my favorite memories from my 50s?
And along the way, I’m sharing three birthday-planning tips that helped make this celebration unforgettable.
💜 A Fabulous 50th Birthday Weekend to Remember
Some birthdays deserve more than one day of celebration, and mine turned into an entire weekend of fun and then a week of fun in the Caribbean! It all started Friday night when Michael arranged a limousine for my daughter, some of my girlfriends, and me. We spent the evening riding around town, enjoying drinks, visiting clubs, and having an absolute blast. And that was only the beginning!
Saturday brought the big event at a hotel across town, followed by a wonderful Sunday brunch. Shortly afterward, Michael and I headed to Jamaica. Talk about celebrating a milestone birthday in style!
As I reflect on that magical weekend, I have some ideas on what made it such an epic 50th birthday party. So let me share some tips I’ve put together.
🎁 Tip #1: Let Someone Else Handle the Birthday Party Planning
Sometimes the greatest gift is having the freedom to simply enjoy your own celebration. Here’s my number one recommendation for planning an epic 50th birthday party: If you’re usually the person who plans everything, hand over the reins!
Now, if you’re a Type A (or A++ in my case), I know the thought of handing over control of such a big event seems like a completely ludicrous idea. But this is one of those walk by faith kind of things.
At the time, I was a busy executive traveling every other week. So the last thing I had the time or energy to do was to plan my own party. Thankfully my older daughter, Chalisse, took charge of the detailed planning. She found the venue, coordinated the decorations, and even handmade many of those spectacular glittery birthday signs.
Purple and lavender are my favorite colors, so naturally, they became the party’s theme. Everyone was asked to wear black, while I wore a custom-made purple mermaid gown created especially for the occasion. And yes, I absolutely loved being the lady in purple!
Best of all, I could enjoy some wonderful surprises because I wasn’t managing the details. My biggest responsibilities were getting my hair and nails done, choosing my outfits, and showing up ready to celebrate. Now that’s my kind of birthday planning!
💃🏾 Tip #2: Create Moments That Make Everyone Want to Celebrate
Great music, a fabulous entrance, and a room full of excitement can turn a birthday party into an experience everyone remembers.I arrived fashionably late, of course! Everyone was already waiting when my son Edris, who served as our fantastic MC, introduced me to the sounds of “Birthday Chick.” I danced my way into that party, and from that moment, the celebration was ON!
Looking at these photographs, I can practically hear the music again. Everyone was dancing, laughing, and having the time of their lives.
I think the only time I stopped dancing was for the champagne toast. Once that was finished, I was right back on the dance floor!
My advice? Think about the experiences you want everyone to enjoy. Whether it’s a memorable entrance, a favorite song, or a champagne toast, create opportunities for people to share the excitement. Those are the moments everyone will still be talking about years later.
❤️ Tip #3: Celebrate With the People Who Make Your Life Special
The decorations were spectacular, but sharing that beautiful night with people I love made the celebration truly extraordinary.
Family traveled from Fort Myers, and so many friends, coworkers, colleagues, and loved ones came to celebrate. Seeing everyone together was one of the greatest joys of the entire evening.
If you’re planning a milestone celebration, make photography a priority. Capture the formal family portraits, the dancing, the laughter, and those wonderfully spontaneous moments. Trust me, those pictures become increasingly meaningful with every passing year.
That weekend also inspired something beautiful the following year. Feeling so loved made me want my daughter to experience that same joy during her wedding celebrations. 💖 Gone But Not Forgotten, Forever in My Heart
Some of my most treasured birthday photographs have become beautiful reminders of the people who helped make that night so special. Looking through these photographs today fills me with gratitude, especially when I see the smiling faces of loved ones who are no longer with us. Among them are five sisters from Michael’s maternal family, including cherished family matriarchs. Today, only two of those five wonderful women are still here.
I also see Michael’s brother Shedrick, affectionately known as Rock, who passed unexpectedly later that year. There’s Angelia, my former coworker who became like a sister to me, and my longtime friend Rene. Our families have shared decades of friendship, going all the way back to when our sons were in elementary school.
Seeing their beautiful smiles reminds me how fortunate I was to share that unforgettable night with them. These photographs preserve the laughter, togetherness, and love that filled the room. And for that, I will always be grateful. ❤️
🥂 Sipping My Way to 60: Celebrating the Memories Along the Way
As February approaches, I’m revisiting my favorite memories from my 50s, one experience and one special cup at a time. There’s a reason I paired that gorgeous black glittery 50 champagne glass with the photograph of me standing behind my birthday table, arms stretched wide. That champagne glass was every bit as sparkly as I felt that day! And that’s exactly the kind of feeling I want to capture throughout my Sipping My Way to 60 countdown.

And for everyone wondering whether I’m planning another huge milestone birthday party, the answer is no! My 50th was a once-in-a-lifetime celebration, and I’m perfectly happy letting it remain that way.
Instead, Michael and I are exploring the possibility of a Southern Caribbean cruise for my 60th. St. Kitts, Grenada, and Barbados are among the bucket-list destinations calling my name. Nothing is finalized yet, so you’ll have to follow along to see where this next adventure takes me!
