If you grow basil, you know how quickly a thriving plant can provide more leaves than one recipe can use. My garden has been producing plenty, so I have been having fun discovering fresh and creative ways to enjoy it.
Finding a new way to use extra basil led me to a flavor combination I had never tried before: watermelon and basil. It sounded refreshing, unexpected, and perfect for summer.
That idea also gave me a beautiful way to feature the newly added watermelon drinkware in my CupofMood Fruit Collection. Each piece featured throughout the recipe offers cheerful serving inspiration for this colorful drink.
The Just Chill Stemless Wine Glass sets the summer mood right away. Its playful watermelon design feels right at home beside fresh garden basil and a cold fruit refresher.

🌿🍝🍕 Basil Brings Fresh Flavor To Pasta And Pizza

One of my favorite recent discoveries has been using basil flowers as a garnish. I added them to pasta with fresh basil leaves, and they brought concentrated basil flavor with a pleasant little crunch.
Basil also pairs beautifully with pizza. That makes the But First Pizza Pfaltzgraff Coffee Mug a fun piece to feature beside this garden-inspired meal. Its cheerful pizza design adds playful CupofMood personality to the scene.
Experiments like these have encouraged me to keep exploring everything my basil plants can offer. I am still gathering creative ideas, and I plan to share another blog when I discover more interesting basil recipes.

🍉🌿 Meet The CupofMood Watermelon Basil Refresher

So in the spirit of exploring more basil recipes, my drink was inspired by the Watermelon Basil Agua Fresca recipe from The Kitchn. I followed the original measurements while making two easy substitutions. There’s more details on those below.
The finished drink was light, sweet, and refreshing. The lemon brought brightness, while the coconut water added a subtle tropical finish that felt perfect for warm weather.
So, I had to share because I know people in my Facebook Groups like: Florida Backyard Gardening and The Black Farmers & Makers Market are often looking for ideas on things to do with extra basil.

🎥🍉 Watch The Refresher Come Together
Before we move through the recipe, the short video gives you a quick look at the full process. You can watch the watermelon transform into a bright pink drink as the basil, lemon, and coconut water join the pitcher.
The video offers a refreshing preview. Then, the sections below walk you through each step and show the watermelon drinkware that complements the summer mood.

🍉 Step One: Start With Fresh Watermelon

Begin by adding four cups of cubed watermelon to a blender. Next, add one-quarter cup of sugar and two to three ice cubes.
The watermelon creates the juicy foundation and vibrant pink color. Meanwhile, the ice helps keep everything cool as the ingredients begin to blend.
The Susan Winget Watermelon Seed Packet Coffee Mug fits naturally beside this garden-inspired step. Its colorful seed-packet artwork connects the fresh watermelon with the basil growing outside.
The mug also brings two parts of the story together. It celebrates garden inspiration while highlighting the fruit that gives this refresher its sweet summer flavor.

🧊🍉 Step Two: Blend Until Smooth

Blend the watermelon, sugar, and ice until the mixture becomes smooth. Watermelon contains plenty of natural juice, so it breaks down quickly. The vivid pink color appears almost immediately. At this point, the drink already looks cold, bright, and inviting.
The Oversized Watermelon Water Bottle by Cool Gear adds bold summer personality to this stage. Its three-dimensional watermelon design turns everyday hydration into a playful seasonal moment.
Its generous size also makes it an eye-catching companion for warm-weather activities. The design feels cheerful, useful, and ready for summer.

🥄🍉 Step Three: Strain For A Smoother Sip

Next, pour the blended watermelon mixture through a fine-mesh strainer. Gently press it with a spoon so the juice can move through. Straining creates a smoother and lighter texture. It also helps the finished drink feel easy to sip over ice.
Take your time while pressing the mixture. Watermelon contains plenty of liquid, so a gentle press helps capture more of that fresh fruit flavor.
And by the way, that pulp was still full of delicious watermelon sweetness. I grabbed a spoon and enjoyed it straight from the strainer. A good recipe can offer a little bonus along the way, and that watermelon pulp was mine. 🍉

🍋🌿 Step Four: Build The Lemon And Basil Base

Add fifteen fresh basil leaves to a clear pitcher. Then, squeeze the juice from one lemon and pour it over the basil.
While the original recipe calls for lime, and I thought I had a lime before I gathered the ingredients. (Maybe it was a bell pepper I saw, lol). Once I discovered lemon was what I had available, I used it and continued on.
That simple substitution worked beautifully. It also reminded me that some of the best kitchen experiments begin with the ingredients already nearby.
And of course, the Watercolor Lemon Lime Coffee Mug complements both versions of the recipe. I chose this one to pair with this step because the cheerful citrus artwork celebrates the original lime idea and my lemon variation.

🥥🍋 Step Five: Add A Tropical Touch With Coconut Water

Pour one-half cup of coconut water into the pitcher with the lemon juice and basil. The original recipe uses regular water. But if you know me, you know I love my coconut water.
And swapping regular water for coconut water gave my version a gentle tropical layer while allowing the other flavors to remain clear. It made the refresher feel even more suited to a sunny afternoon.
The Royal Doulton Carmina Lemon Tree Mug brings an elegant citrus detail to this stage. Its lemon-tree artwork feels right at home beside fresh lemon, basil, and coconut water.

🌿🥄 Step Six: Gently Muddle The Basil

Use a spoon to press the basil leaves gently against the sides of the pitcher. This releases their fragrant oils and helps the herbal flavor blend into the lemon and coconut water.
Side note, since I really enjoyed this recipe and plan to try more drink recipes that involve muddling, I’m going to invest in a real muddler like this one. The design will make it even more effective in getting the best results.
Now back to the recipe. Since this was my first time tasting watermelon and basil together, I stayed with fifteen leaves. That amount created a light basil flavor while allowing the sweet fruit to lead each sip. I found that the watermelon and basil complemented one another beautifully.
Next time, I might experiment with adding more basil leaves to see how the additional leaves enhances the taste.
The You’re One in a Melon Swirly Straw Acrylic Tumbler would make a playful serving choice for this refresher. Its cheerful message and swirly straw match the fun summer personality of the drink.

🍉🫗 Step Seven: Bring Everything Together

Now, pour the strained watermelon juice into the pitcher. Stir everything well so the watermelon, lemon, coconut water, and basil can come together.
This is the moment when the CupofMood Watermelon Basil Refresher fully takes shape. The pink juice and green basil create a beautiful summer color combination inside the clear pitcher.
The aroma also begins to reveal the different layers. Fresh watermelon leads the way, while basil and lemon add brightness around it.
The Realistic Hand Painted Watermelon Coffee Mug mirrors those rich colors beautifully. Its dimensional fruit design brings bold watermelon personality to a summer table or seasonal display.

🧊🍉 Step Eight: Serve It Cold

Serve the refresher over ice. Then, add a fresh basil leaf, basil flower, or lemon slice for a simple finishing touch.
The finished flavor was light, sweet, and refreshing. The coconut water supplied a gentle tropical note, while the basil stayed pleasantly soft.
Basil flowers would also make a lovely garnish. They connect the drink to the garden while adding the flavorful little crunch I have grown to enjoy.
The Vintage Tabletops Unlimited Fresh Watermelon Oversized Coffee Mug adds another bold serving idea. Its oversized shape and cheerful fruit artwork celebrate summer in a big way.

🥤🍉 A Small Batch With A Sweet Surprise

This recipe made about three servings, with roughly six to eight ounces in each glass. That amount was perfect for Michael, Mikese, and me. For a larger gathering, you can simply double the recipe.
Mikese is usually my skeptic when I try an unexpected flavor combination. He questioned whether basil belonged in a drink, yet he changed his mind after tasting it. He enjoyed the refresher, and Michael liked it too. Their reactions made the experiment even more satisfying.
The Vintage Anchor Hocking Watermelon Jelly Jar Acrylic Tumbler adds vintage fruit charm to the serving inspiration. It joins the other watermelon pieces featured in the growing CupofMood Fruit Collection.
Each piece brings its own style to the summer table. Some feel playful and modern, while others celebrate vintage watermelon charm.
